The Lagos State Government on Friday April 24th has reveal that No fewer than 62 abandoned babies, consisting of 28 male and 34 females, were rescued by the Lagos State Government in the last one year. Lagos State Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development Permanent Secretary, Dr. Adesegun Oshinyinka at a Press Briefing in Ikeja disclosed that 34 of the babies were male, while 28 were female, that the babies had been taken to some registered orphanages where they were being given adequate care.
According to him, they were either picked up from different locations after calls from concerned citizens or brought in by good spirited individuals were being carefully looked after by the relevant homes under the supervision of the ministry.
“The State Government is committed to ensuring that adequate care and protection are provided for vulnerable children abandoned, homeless abused or other children whose rights and privileges as stipulated by the Child Rights Law have been trampled upon. The child protection unit is responsible for the rescue/ referral of all abandoned babies and “lost but found” children in the state registered orphanages”. He said.
